In the late 1950s, the Deutsche Reichsbahn owned a large number of different 2- and 3-axle passenger carriages of the regional design with wooden bodies. As part of a reconstruction programme, the robust chassis of the carriages were standardised to a uniform length and the worn wooden bodies were replaced with new welded superstructures. In a pilot series, carriages with four doors were initially built, but in series production only two doors were used. Later, in addition to the passenger carriages, luggage and mail carriages were also built. In total, around 3,000 carriages were reconstructed or built.
