By the late 1950s, the Deutsche Reichsbahn owned a large number of different 2- and 3-axle passenger carriages of the regional design with wooden bodies. As part of a reconstruction programme, the robust chassis of the carriages were standardised to a uniform length and the worn wooden bodies were replaced with new welded superstructures. In a pilot series, carriages with 4 doors were initially built, but in series production only 2 doors were used. Later, in addition to the passenger carriages, luggage and mail carriages were also built. A total of around 3,000 carriages were reconstructed or built.
