‘Donnerbüchsen’ were originally two-axle passenger carriages of older designs. The nickname came from the loud, rumbling sound made by the carriage bodies on the simple running gear. After the Second World War, the German Reichsbahn of the GDR still had many old regional and standardised carriages in service. Due to a shortage of carriages and outdated rolling stock, from the 1950s onwards they were not simply restored, but fundamentally modernised – at the DR this was known as ‘Rekonstruktion’, or ‘Reko’ for short.
‘Reko-Donnerbüchsen’ were fitted with completely new side walls featuring the large windows familiar from the Rekowagen, and were of course also modernised internally accordingly.
