In the 1950s, Waggonbau Bautzen built a short freight train baggage van on behalf of the DR. More than 200 vans were procured in two production series. A distinctive feature of the vans was their built-in rear signals, whose red and white surfaces could be covered with rotating shutters.
From 1964, the carriages were also used on branch lines in passenger trains. These carriages were marked according to the passenger carriage scheme with the designation D. From 1977, those used exclusively as passenger luggage carriages were re-marked in Daa.
