In the GDR, the appearance of the P 8 conversion, following the installation of the Giesl flat ejector, was nicknamed ‘Quetschesse’ by the staff. During performance tests at a speed of 50 km/h, a coal saving of 14% was demonstrated compared to the locomotive with a standard suction system. In 1966 and 1967, 75 locomotives were converted at the Leipzig “Einheit” rolling stock depot. Their deployment was restricted to the three Reichsbahn directorates of Cottbus, Erfurt and Magdeburg. From there, they were deployed, mostly in passenger service with Rekowagons and other types of carriages.
