From 1928 to 1943, almost all German locomotive factories delivered a total of 775 locomotives of this class to the Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft. In terms of design, the 1,000 hp locomotives were designed for a speed of 70–80 km/h, which meant that, in addition to their main area of operation on ‘secondary lines’, they could also be used on main and feeder lines. At the start of the 1950s, 164 Class 86 locomotives were still in service in the GDR. In 1970, 162 units were still assigned computer-compatible road numbers; they were taken out of service from 1973 onwards.

Von 1928 bis 1943 lieferten fast alle deutschen Lokomotivfabriken insgesamt 775 Maschinen dieser Baureihe an die Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft. Konstruktiv waren die 1.000-PS-Loks für eine Geschwindigkeit von 70–80 km/h ausgelegt, womit sie neben ihrem Haupteinsatzgebiet der „Nebenbahn“ auch auf Haupt- und Zulaufstrecken einsetzbar waren. Zu Beginn der 1950er Jahre standen in der DDR noch 164 Loks der Baureihe 86 zur Verfügung. 1970 erhielten noch 162 Maschinen eine EDV-gerechte Betriebsnummer, die Ausmusterung erfolgte ab 1973.
