For testing purposes, a small number of Class 110 locomotives were fitted with a more powerful, 1,200 hp diesel engine in 1972. This was necessary to enable the locomotives to be used in express train services. Other components were also modified on the test locomotives. Due to the positive test results, a total of almost 500 locomotives were converted to the more powerful Class 112 at the Reichsbahn repair depot in Stendal.
