To speed up the transition to diesel traction, the Deutsche Reichsbahn (DR) procured a total of 378 locomotives of the V 200 class (later class 120) from the Soviet Union between 1966 and 1975. As the locomotives lacked on-board heating ex-works, they were predominantly used in freight services. Due to the loud engine noise, the name ‘Taiga Drum’ quickly became established for these locomotives.
