To remedy the shortage of powerful shunting locomotives, the German Federal Railways began procuring locomotives of the V 60 series from the mid-1950s onwards. The difference between the V 60 (260) and V 60.1 (261) series lies in the higher friction load of the BR 261. These locomotives, which could be found at almost all German marshalling yards, reached a maximum speed of 30 km/h in shunting mode and 60 km/h on mainline service. In 1975, the colours ocean blue and beige defined the locomotives’ exterior appearance.
