The design of the Class 132 was derived from experience with the Class 130 and 131. The DR procured 709 units of this optimised locomotive, equipped with an electric heating system, from the Voroshilovgrad Locomotive Works in the Soviet Union. The top speed was set at 120 km/h, and the power output of this versatile locomotive was 3,000 hp. With the merger of the Deutsche Reichsbahn and the Deutsche Bundesbahn to form Deutsche Bahn AG following reunification, the DR’s diesel locomotives were re-designated with a leading ‘2’ in accordance with the DB’s class numbering scheme.
