Based on tried-and-tested components from the Class 110 series, the Class 111 was designed as an express train locomotive. The designers placed particular emphasis on improving running smoothness at high speeds through the use of new bogies and on enhancing working conditions for the drivers. A total of 227 locomotives were procured by the DB between 1974 and 1984.
Developed as a multi-purpose locomotive, it was also used in S-Bahn services. These locomotives were real gems: a wide, all-round orange band adorned the pebble-grey locomotive body and gave the machine its unmistakable S-Bahn character. It became particularly well known in front of reversible trains in the Rhine-Ruhr region, where it offered rapid acceleration, reversible train control and reliable operation in dense, frequent service.
