The rapid modernisation of the Austrian electric locomotive fleet began with the entry into service of the first “Taurus” Class 1016 locomotive in the summer of 1999. A dual-system version of this universal locomotive was also procured for AC operation at 15 kV/16.7 Hz and 25 kV/50 Hz. By 2006, 282 Class 1116 locomotives had been put into service. They are approved for 230 km/h. The power output is 6,400 kW.
The Railjet is a key component of European long-distance rail services, connecting not only major cities in Austria but also international destinations. Locomotives 1116.201–251 were adapted by Siemens in Munich for the Railjet services introduced in December 2008.
