From 1928 to 1943, almost all German locomotive factories delivered a total of 775 locomotives of this class to the Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft. In terms of design, the 1,000 hp locomotives were built for a speed of 70–80 km/h, which meant that, in addition to their main area of operation on ‘secondary lines’, they could also be used on main and feeder lines. At the beginning of the 1950s, 164 Class 86 locomotives were still in service in the GDR. In 1970, 162 units were assigned computer-compatible road numbers, and they were taken out of service from 1973 onwards.
